A swaying traveler’s anthem with a hard-won sense of inner peace, “Spirit” was co-written by White with Leslie Satcher and Phil Pence, arriving today (6/30) as the first taste of an upcoming EP.
Co-produced by Matthew Ridenour and White himself, the tune taps a deep well of experience and features the easy-going sound of an acoustic-Soul ballad. But with White's aching vocal leading a soft-touch mix of emotive slide guitar and homesick fiddle, it finds a man coming to terms with the blessing that is also his curse.
Called to the open highway and the mysteries around each bend, White sings that he’ll soon ride off again – like a lonesome cowboy chasing the sun. “When I get lost in the wheels, you go on and say goodbye / I can’t seem to settle down (lord), so I don’t even try,” the chorus goes.
No stranger to the traveling life he depicts, “Spirit” arrives as White continues to build his one-of-a-kind Country-Soul following – especially in the UK and beyond.
The heart-rending new track premiered on the UK’s BBC Radio Thursday night (6/29), and comes hot on the heels of White’s headlining tour through Northern Ireland, Ireland, Scotland and England – eight dates which wrapped up June 25 with a show in Cambridge.
After spending last year headlining THE OPTIMYSTIC TOUR in triumphant celebration of his 2022 studio album return, THE OPTIMYSTIC, White followed up with the sugar-sweet “Pound Cake” in December, and now looks ahead with more to come in 2023.
He’ll spend the rest of the summer on tour from coast to coast, and more information about new music will be announced soon. Check White’s website for his full tour itinerary.
